We have learnt about how to perform poems. Here are some videos of us reciting some poems with the actions we made up ourselves.

Our aim when teaching the children to read is that they become fluent in word recognition, but equally good at language comprehension. Most importantly, we want the children to enjoy reading.
As parents, the most effective way for you to help your child is to read to them every day. Children who are read to are more interested and motivated to become readers themselves. It is also a good opportunity to introduce new ideas and vocabulary. The children bring library books home from school for you to share together and your local library is a good source of a wide range of books. Please discuss the stories with your child, asking questions like “What do you think will happen next?” or “Why did they do that?” and at the end of the book you could talk about whether they had enjoyed the story and see if they can tell you the order of events in the story. 
The children also bring home a reading book from our reading scheme. Most of the books that we use for early reading are from the Oxford Reading Tree. Initially, the words in these books will mostly be decodable using the phonemes which we have learnt at school. However, the reading scheme is only one part of the reading curriculum and at other times, they may bring home ‘tricky word’ cards or captions to read.  We encourage the children in Reception and Key Stage 1 to read to an adult for 15 minutes a day and for adults to record the child’s reading in their Reading Diary, which provides an excellent way for parents and class teachers to communicate about their progress in reading. 


Key Stage 1 children have a daily 20 minute session on phonics.  We follow the Letters and Sounds Scheme of work.

The articulation of phonemes is most important.  It is crucial in helping your child to learn how to read and write.  Watch and learn!

Jolly Phonics

To help the children remember the phonemes, we also teach ‘Jolly Phonics’ actions to accompany each sound. See the link below for actions for Phase 2 sounds. 

Phonics Play

We use a range of games to reinforce the learning of phonics. Phonics play has a range of resources to aid your child through the 6 phonics phases. We use this in school to support the children’s learning and it can also be used at home.
